Lesson 2: The AI Timeline: From Turing to Today

AI Timeline

“Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029. Follow that out further to, say, 2045, we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold.” — Ray Kurzweil

Welcome to Day 2 of 30 Days of AI for Leaders!

This lesson offers a panoramic view of AI’s journey, highlighting the milestones, challenges, and aspirations that have defined its evolution.

The thought exercise encourages learners to delve deeper into specific moments, fostering a holistic understanding of AI’s impact on technology and society.

Learning Objective

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to trace the key milestones in the evolution of AI, understand the significance of pivotal moments and figures, and appreciate the rapid advancements and challenges faced over the years.

Introduction

The journey of AI, from a mere concept to a transformative force, is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance.

Tracing this timeline offers insights into the technological, philosophical, and societal shifts that have shaped AI’s trajectory.

Early Foundations

  1. Alan Turing and the Turing Test (1950): Proposed a criterion of machine intelligence, questioning if machines can think.
  2. Birth of AI (1956): The Dartmouth Workshop, where the term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined, marking the formal start of AI as a field of study.

Golden Age and Initial Optimism

  1. ELIZA (1964-1966): An early natural language processing computer program, simulating conversation.
  2. First AI Winter (1974-1980): Due to inflated expectations and technical limitations, funding and interest in AI waned.

Revival and Rise of Neural Networks

  1. Backpropagation (1986): A key algorithm that allowed training of multi-layer neural networks, paving the way for deep learning.
  2. IBM’s Deep Blue (1997): Defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov, showcasing AI’s potential.

Modern AI and Breakthroughs

  1. ImageNet Competition (2012): Deep learning models significantly improved image recognition accuracy.
  2. AlphaGo by DeepMind (2016): Defeated Go world champion, a feat previously thought to be decades away.

Contemporary Challenges and Considerations

  1. Ethical Concerns: Issues of bias, fairness, and transparency in AI models.
  2. AI in Society: The impact of AI on employment, privacy, and societal structures.

Looking Ahead

  1. Integration of AI and Neuroscience: Drawing parallels between the human brain and AI models for mutual insights.
  2. General AI: The pursuit of machines that can perform any intellectual task that a human can.

Thought Exercise

Imagine you’re a historian documenting the evolution of AI.

  1. Choose three pivotal moments from the timeline and explain their significance in shaping the AI landscape.
  2. Reflect on the societal implications during each of these moments. How did society perceive and react to these advancements?
  3. Project into the future: Based on the past and present, what do you envision for AI in the next two decades?
