Think360: A Better Framework for Better Thinking and Better Decision-Making

by JD Meier

Think360

“Great decisions are born from great perspectives. Think360 helps you see the whole picture, unlocking better thinking and better solutions.” — JD Meier

Think360 is a holistic framework I developed to enhance your thinking, decision-making, and innovation.

Think360 empowers leaders, teams, and individuals to approach challenges and opportunities from multiple perspectives, ensuring balanced, inclusive, and sustainable solutions, as well as creativity, collaboration, and confidence.

Introduction: The Big Picture of Think360

Over years of experience at Microsoft and beyond, I’ve explored countless ways to improve how we think individually and as teams.

Along the way, I learned a powerful truth: if you can explore perspectives, you can think better about anything.

The key is to focus on useful perspectives—ones that help illuminate challenges, uncover opportunities, and drive smarter decisions.

Perspectives like the Future, Imagination, or even Angel’s Advocate open new doors of possibility.

Think360 is my attempt to distill these insights into a simple, actionable framework.

It provides a structured way to think comprehensively and systematically about any situation, ensuring that no critical angle is missed.

What is Think360?

Think360 provides a structured approach to decision-making by incorporating eight distinct lenses or perspectives:

  1. Facts (The Analyst Lens): Focuses on gathering and analyzing objective information.
  2. Feelings (The Empathy Lens): Considers emotional and subjective experiences to ensure alignment with stakeholders.
  3. Feasibility (The Realist Lens): Evaluates the practicality and resource availability of solutions.
  4. Future (The Visionary Lens): Anticipates long-term consequences and trends.
  5. Positivity (The Optimist Lens): Highlights strengths and opportunities.
  6. Critique (The Devil’s Advocate Lens): Challenges assumptions to identify potential risks.
  7. Imagination (The Creative Lens): Explores unconventional ideas and innovative possibilities.
  8. Angel’s Advocate (The Supporter Lens): Amplifies strengths and advocates for the potential of ideas.

By systematically exploring these perspectives, Think360 ensures robust, well-rounded decisions that address both analytical and emotional considerations, while inspiring creativity and foresight.

Why Use Think360?

Think360 transforms how decisions are made, offering these key benefits:

  1. Combat Biases for Better Decisions:
    • Incorporates multiple perspectives to reduce individual biases.
    • Encourages rational, balanced, and objective thinking.

    • Promotes collaboration by ensuring every voice is heard.
  3. Drive Holistic and Sustainable Solutions:

    • Ensures strategies are adaptive to future trends and capable of driving long-term success.

How to Use Think360

  1. Sequential Exploration:
    • Begin with Facts to understand the current situation.
    • Move through each lens systematically, ensuring thorough exploration.
    • End with Angel’s Advocate to reinforce strengths and inspire confidence.
  2. Parallel Thinking for Teams:
    • Use Edward de Bono’s “Parallel Thinking” approach to ensure all team members focus on the same perspective at a time.
    • Assign specific roles for each lens or rotate roles to ensure balanced contributions.
  3. Practical Tools:
    • Use visual aids (e.g., cards or icons for each lens).
    • Document insights from each lens to consolidate ideas.
    • Debrief after completing all lenses to review outcomes and decide on actions.

Example Conversation: Using Think360 in a Team Meeting

Scenario: A team is tasked with developing a strategy for launching a new product.

Facilitator:
“Let’s use the Think360 Framework to guide our discussion and ensure we look at this from all angles. We’ll move through each lens systematically, starting with Facts. What do we know about the market, the competition, and our product?”

1. Facts (The Analyst Lens)

Team Member 1:
“We’ve identified that the target market is primarily young professionals, aged 25-35. Competitor analysis shows two major players with similar offerings, but our product has a unique feature set.”

Team Member 2:
“We’ve also gathered customer feedback during beta testing, which shows 75% of users appreciated the ease of use, but 30% felt the pricing was too high.”

Facilitator:
“Great. Next, let’s move to Feelings. How do we and our stakeholders feel about the product and launch?”

2. Feelings (The Empathy Lens)

Team Member 3:
“Our internal teams are excited but also anxious about meeting the aggressive launch timeline.”

Team Member 4:
“I think customers will feel confident about the product, but we may need to address pricing concerns to avoid alienating potential buyers.”

Facilitator:
“Good insights. Now, let’s evaluate Feasibility. Can we realistically achieve our goals with the resources we have?”

3. Feasibility (The Realist Lens)

Team Member 2:
“Our development team needs an additional two weeks to finalize the app. That could push the launch date.”

Team Member 1:
“Marketing has the budget for a mid-scale campaign, but we’ll need additional funds for a nationwide rollout.”

Facilitator:
“Understood. Now let’s think about the Future. What long-term impacts should we consider?”

4. Future (The Visionary Lens)

Team Member 4:
“If the launch is successful, this product could position us as a leader in this space for years. However, if we fail to deliver on the pricing or user experience, we risk damaging our brand reputation.”

Team Member 3:
“We should also consider scalability—how we can adapt the product for other markets or demographics.”

Facilitator:
“Excellent points. Let’s shift to Positivity. What strengths and opportunities can we leverage?”

5. Positivity (The Optimist Lens)

Team Member 1:
“Our unique features set us apart, and customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive about usability.”

Team Member 2:
“We have a great story to tell about how this product solves real-world problems, which will resonate in our marketing.”

Facilitator:
“Now for Critique. What could go wrong?”

6. Critique (The Devil’s Advocate Lens)

Team Member 3:
“The pricing issue might hinder adoption. If competitors lower their prices, we could lose market share.”

Team Member 4:
“There’s also a risk of over-promising on scalability if our infrastructure isn’t ready for a sudden surge in users.”

Facilitator:
“Good to identify these risks. Let’s brainstorm solutions using Imagination.”

7. Imagination (The Creative Lens)

Team Member 2:
“What if we offered a tiered pricing model to address different customer budgets?”

Team Member 3:
“Imagine if we launched a referral program—users could earn discounts by inviting friends, which would help us grow organically.”

Facilitator:
“Fantastic ideas. Finally, let’s wrap up with Angel’s Advocate. Why is this product great, and how can we ensure it succeeds?”

8. Angel’s Advocate (The Supporter Lens)

Team Member 4:
“This product fills a gap in the market by providing a seamless user experience that no competitor offers. Let’s focus on communicating that value clearly.”

Team Member 1:
“Our team has worked hard to create something innovative and impactful. We should celebrate and trust in our work.”

Facilitator:
“Thank you, everyone! We’ve considered this from all perspectives. Let’s consolidate these insights into an actionable plan and schedule follow-ups to address key areas like pricing and scalability.”

This example demonstrates how Think360 explores each angle, enabling the team to make well-rounded decisions while fostering creativity, collaboration, and confidence.

Think360 is framework to elevate your thinking and decision-making to a new level.
