The Why, What, and How of Innovation

by JD Meier

The WHY, HOW, WHAT of Innovation

“Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.” – Winston Churchill

Through the “why,” “how,” and “what” of innovation, you unleash your full potential and bring your ideas to life, solving problems, and improving the world.

Innovation is about the intersection of purpose, creativity, and impact.

Innovation often involves taking risks and thinking creatively to come up with original solutions to problems.

Innovation can be a process of cross-pollinating ideas from one domain to another, and it can also be an accidental discovery, where one effort fails, but leads to a breakthrough.

How I Think About the WHY, the WHAT, and the HOW of Innovation

Here is how I think about the WHY, the WHAT, and the HOW of innovation:

  • WHY: The “Why” of innovation is about finding your unique purpose and motivation for making a positive impact in the world.  Innovation is often driven by a desire to improve the way things are done or to create new value or create new experiences.
  • WHAT:  The “What” of innovation is the tangible result of this process, the manifestation of your ambition and creativity, and the foundation for your continued growth and impact. Innovation can happen in many different areas, including technology, business, science, and the arts.
  • HOW:  The “How” of innovation is about developing the skills, processes, and approaches to bring your ideas to life.  Innovation as the process or the output of creating new ideas or methods, or improving existing ones, in order to solve problems, and meet new needs.  Innovation can be accidental or intentional and by-design.

By focusing on the “Why,” “How,” and “What” of innovation, you unleash your full potential, create impact, and drive progress in your work and life.

The WHY of Innovation

The “Why” of innovation is a personal and compelling force that drives individuals to strive for growth, progress, and impact.

It is the spark that ignites the imagination, fuels creativity, and inspires action.

The “Why” of innovation is about more than just creating new ideas or products; it’s about making a difference in the world, solving problems, and improving lives.

When you understand the “Why” of innovation, you tap into a wellspring of purpose, passion, and energy that drives you to achieve your full potential and unleash your creative power.

Your “Why” of innovation is what makes you unique and sets you apart, and it’s what propels you to turn your vision into reality and bring your ideas to life.

The WHAT of Innovation

The “What” of innovation is the tangible manifestation of our imagination and creativity, the culmination of our dreams and aspirations.

It is the embodiment of our passion, purpose, and problem-solving abilities.

The “What” of innovation is where our vision and ideas come to life, where we bring our purpose to the world and make a positive impact on people’s lives.

The “What” of innovation is the realization of our potential, the culmination of our efforts, and the manifestation of our unique impact on the world.

Whether it’s a game-changing product, a life-saving technology, or a revolutionary process, the “What” of innovation is the embodiment of our ambition and creativity and the foundation for our continued growth and impact.

The HOW of Innovation

The “How” of innovation refers to the processes, methods, and techniques used to bring innovation to life. It encompasses the steps, tools, and approaches used to turn ideas into reality, from ideation and experimentation to implementation and scaling.

The “How” of innovation is about more than just creating something new; it’s about how to bring a new idea to market, how to validate it, how to refine it, and how to scale it.

It involves the development of new skills, the collaboration with others, and the application of best practices and methodologies to create impact and drive progress.

Whether it’s through design thinking, agile development, or lean startup methodologies, the “How” of innovation is about finding the right approach to turn your vision into reality and make a positive impact in the world.

McKinsey on the WHO, the WHAT, and the HOW of Innovation

This is all empowering perspective for using innovastion as a lever for growth and transformation, but how can leaders prioritize their innovation efforts?

That’s where it helps to have clarity around what drives a successful innovation.

In Innovation–the launchpad out of the crisis, Laura Furstenthal, PhD Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, shares an interesting insight about successful innovation:

“Every successful innovation throughout history has come at the intersection of three lenses.”

The 3 lenses are:

  1. WHO: An unmet customer need.  Does what you are doing matter? Will customers benefit from it?
  2. WHAT: An unmet customer need.  Can you build it, and what technologies do you need to do that?
  3. HOW: A business model that enables you to monetize that solution.  Will it win? Is there an opportunity for the innovation to take on a market?

Dr. Furstenthal writes:

“Because all of these lenses are required for successful innovation, the best way to generate new concepts is to collide them in a very structured and purposeful way.”

Unleashing the Power of Innovation: The Why, How, and What of Making a Difference

The “Why,” “How,” and “What” of innovation are interdependent elements that work together to create impact and drive progress.

By understanding your “Why” and aligning your goals with your purpose, you tap into the passion and energy that drives you to achieve your full potential.

The “What” of innovation is the tangible manifestation of your ambition and creativity.

The “How” of innovation is about developing the skills, processes, and approaches to turn your vision into reality.

So, let’s embrace the “Why,” “How,” and “What” of innovation and bring our full potential to the world!

Whether it’s through solving big problems or improving people’s lives, we all have the power to be innovators and make a positive impact.
