Appreciative Inquiry vs. Problem Solving Orientation

by JD Meier

Appreciative Inquiry vs. Problem Solving Orientation

“Celebrate the wins, learn from the challenges, and keep moving forward with a strengths-focused mindset.” — Unknown

Appreciative Inquiry and Problem Solving offer distinct approaches, each with its own merits.

Throughout my years at Microsoft, I’ve come to realize that the right orientation and perspective can make a world of difference in driving success and fostering innovation.

Focusing on strengths and amplifying them through Appreciative Inquiry is a transformative approach. It encourages individuals and teams to leverage their inherent talents, capabilities, and past successes to propel them forward.

Just as Olympians become great by honing their strengths, organizations and individuals can achieve greatness by capitalizing on what makes them unique and exceptional.

On the other hand, problem solving has its place in addressing challenges and overcoming obstacles. It enables us to identify areas for improvement and take necessary actions to drive change.

However, solely focusing on fixing weaknesses can limit our potential and hinder our growth.

Unlock Your Full Potential and Achieve Extraordinary Outcomes

Embracing a strengths-based approach, complemented by problem solving when needed, allows us to unlock our full potential and achieve extraordinary outcomes.

By embracing Appreciative Inquiry and its focus on strengths, we create an environment that nurtures growth, fosters innovation, and empowers individuals and teams to thrive.

It sparks a positive mindset, enhances collaboration, and cultivates a culture of continuous improvement. When we combine this strengths focus with problem solving as a supportive tool, we lay the foundation for sustainable success and transformative change.

In the journey towards organizational and personal growth, let us remember that our strengths are our greatest assets. By embracing and amplifying them, we can accelerate our progress, inspire others, and unlock boundless possibilities.

Let’s shift our focus from fixing weaknesses to celebrating and cultivating our strengths, where our true greatness resides.

A Problem Orientation vs. a Strengths Orientation

A problem orientation and an Appreciative Inquiry or strengths orientation represent two different mindsets or approaches to addressing situations.

Here’s an explanation of the distinction and why it matters:

  1. Problem Orientation: A problem orientation focuses on identifying and analyzing the issues, challenges, or deficiencies in a situation. It places emphasis on identifying what is not working, what needs to be fixed, and the gaps or obstacles that need to be overcome. This mindset tends to adopt a deficit-based perspective, often assuming that something is wrong or lacking.
  2. Appreciative Inquiry or Strengths Orientation: An Appreciative Inquiry or strengths orientation focuses on identifying and leveraging the positive aspects, strengths, and opportunities within a situation. It seeks to understand what is already working well, what people value, and the factors that contribute to success. This mindset emphasizes building on existing strengths, assets, and achievements to create positive change.

Why It Matters

The orientation we adopt significantly influences our perceptions, actions, and outcomes.

A problem orientation can lead to a narrow focus on fixing or eliminating issues, potentially leading to a negative and reactive mindset.

In contrast, an Appreciative Inquiry or strengths orientation encourages a more positive and proactive approach.

It promotes a mindset of possibility, innovation, and collaboration, enabling individuals and organizations to build upon their strengths and create sustainable solutions.

By adopting an Appreciative Inquiry or strengths orientation, individuals and organizations can cultivate a more positive and empowering mindset. It enables them to uncover untapped potential, inspire creativity, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and growth.

Emphasizing strengths and what is already working well helps to generate enthusiasm, motivation, and resilience in the pursuit of positive change.

A Garden Metaphor to Better Understand Appreciative Inquiry

Imagine you are exploring a garden. Appreciative Inquiry is like wandering through the garden and admiring the blooming flowers, lush greenery, and vibrant colors.

It encourages you to focus on the beauty and abundance of the garden, appreciating its natural wonders and the moments when it is at its most vibrant and alive. It seeks to understand what makes the garden flourish and thrive.

On the other hand, problem solving in this context is akin to noticing areas in the garden that need attention. It involves identifying withered plants, pests, or other issues that hinder the garden’s growth and vitality. The problem-solving approach is focused on finding solutions to these challenges, nurturing the plants back to health, removing pests, and improving the overall condition of the garden.

In essence, Appreciative Inquiry emphasizes celebrating and building upon the garden’s strengths and beauty, whereas problem solving aims to address and overcome specific challenges to restore the garden’s health and vibrancy.

Both approaches play important roles in nurturing and enhancing the garden, but their focus and methods differ.

Deficit Perspective vs. Accentuating the Positive

While both problem solving and Appreciative Inquiry involve seeking improvement, they differ in their underlying philosophies and methods.

Problem solving focuses on identifying and addressing issues, often stemming from a deficit-based perspective that something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Appreciative Inquiry, on the other hand, shifts the focus towards exploring and amplifying strengths, positive experiences, and what is already working well within a system.

Appreciative Inquiry seeks to understand the best of what is, envisioning what could be, and creating a positive vision for the future. It is a strengths-based approach that promotes collaboration, innovation, and leveraging the positive aspects of a system to generate meaningful change.

Problem solving, while important, tends to address specific challenges and overcome obstacles to restore functionality.

How To Use Creative Problem Solving and Appreciative Inquiry for “Better Together”

To effectively use Creative Problem Solving (CPS) and Appreciative Inquiry (AI) together, consider the following steps:

  1. Define the Situation: Start by clearly defining the situation or challenge at hand. Identify the specific problem or opportunity that needs attention.
  2. Apply Creative Problem Solving: Utilize CPS techniques to analyze the problem, generate ideas, and explore potential solutions. Use divergent thinking to brainstorm creative possibilities and convergent thinking to evaluate and refine those ideas. Apply problem-solving tools such as brainstorming, mind mapping, or the SCAMPER technique to generate innovative solutions.
  3. Shift to Appreciative Inquiry: Transition to an Appreciative Inquiry approach by shifting the focus to the positive aspects of the situation. Explore and appreciate what has worked well in similar or related situations, and identify the strengths and successes that can be leveraged in the current context. Engage stakeholders in sharing stories and experiences of when they have been at their best.
  4. Integrate Findings: Bring together the insights gained from both CPS and AI. Identify the common themes, patterns, and strengths that emerged during the CPS and AI processes. Look for innovative ideas and solutions that build upon the strengths and successes identified through Appreciative Inquiry.
  5. Generate Creative Solutions: Use the strengths-based perspective from Appreciative Inquiry to inform and inspire the generation of creative solutions. Combine the positive aspects and lessons learned with the innovative ideas generated through Creative Problem Solving. This integration can lead to unique and effective solutions that capitalize on strengths while addressing the identified problem or opportunity.
  6. Plan and Implement: Develop an action plan based on the selected solutions. Consider the practical steps required to implement the solutions and monitor progress. Ensure that the plan incorporates the identified strengths and leverages the positive aspects identified through Appreciative Inquiry.
  7. Continuous Learning and Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement by regularly reflecting on the outcomes and feedback. Encourage ongoing dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to refine and enhance the implemented solutions based on new insights and emerging opportunities.

By combining the strengths of Creative Problem Solving and Appreciative Inquiry, you can foster a comprehensive and innovative approach to problem-solving.

This integration enables you to tap into the creative potential of generating solutions while leveraging the positive aspects and strengths of individuals and the organization.

It creates a positive and forward-thinking mindset that leads to impactful and sustainable outcomes.

Combine Appreciative Inquiry + Problem Solving to Change Better

Appreciative Inquiry and Problem Solving represent two powerful approaches to driving change and achieving positive outcomes.

Appreciative Inquiry focuses on leveraging strengths, celebrating achievements, and envisioning possibilities, while Problem Solving addresses challenges and drives improvement.

However, the true power lies in recognizing that these approaches are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary.

By integrating Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based mindset with Problem Solving’s analytical tools, we create a holistic framework that enables us to tap into our full potential and address critical areas for growth.

This combination empowers individuals and organizations to embrace a positive and innovative mindset, celebrate successes, and tackle challenges with a solution-oriented approach. It fosters a culture of continuous improvement and empowers individuals to thrive by building on their strengths.

Ultimately, the integration of Appreciative Inquiry and Problem Solving allows us to achieve greater insights, generate more effective solutions, and create a sustainable path towards success and growth.
